Therapy Program
Solomon Dy, Physical Therapist. Lori Wisenbaugh, PTA
Courtney Manor offers a variety of different therapies. Here is a list of the types offered and a brief description of what purposes they serve.
Speech Therapy Provides a variety of services to a variety of individuals. Typically, the patient has a diagnosis such as CVA (stroke), TIA, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer Disease or dementia, or a neurological disorder such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson Disease. The patient is referred by his or her attending physician, often at the request of the facility nursing staff, therapy staff, dietician, or the patients family. At any time during the patients stay in the facility, a speech or swallowing evaluation may be requested by the patient physician, especially if the patient has had a change in his or her medical condition. At that time, the speech-language pathologist will complete an evaluation and recommend treatment at a level appropriate for the patient. Treatment usually involves 3-5 sessions per week, for 15 to 60 minute sessions, depending on the patient tolerance, and will focus on what will help the patient achieve his or her most independent functional status. As long as the patient is participating in treatment sessions and is making appropriate progress towards his or her goals for therapy, speech therapy will continue. the speech-language pathologist works closely with the other therapy disciplines such as physical and occupational therapy, as well as nursing, social work, dietary staff, and the patients physician.
Speech therapy can involve treatment for any or all of the following: expressive and receptive language deficits (including word retrieval loss, difficulty formulating and understanding sentences and conversation, and difficulty following commands); dysphagia (swallowing disorders); cognitive deficits (including difficulty attending to a task, sequencing a task, or formulating thoughts and ideas); memory loss and disorientation (including difficulty remembering time, place, and person); reading and writing disorders (at the word, sentence, and paragraph level). The speech-language pathologist can also refer a patient (upon physician agreement) to an audiologist for a hearing evaluation, to a radiologist for a modified barium swallow evaluation to assess swallowing skills, or to a specialized speech-language pathologist to assess a patients ability to use an alternative communication device (such as a computer to generate speech). In addition to individual treatment sessions, the speech-language pathologist can provide group therapy sessions to several patients when appropriate, provide counseling and training to staff and family members, and provide instruction to the patient, staff, and family on using appropriate compensation strategies (for language and/or swallowing) for patients according to their needs.
